John 17
This is the prayer that Jesus prayed in Gethsemane. This is the Lord's Prayer, the High priestly Prayer. Jesus prayed for Himself (v. 1-5); Jesus prayed for the disciples (v. 6-10) and Jesus prayed for all believers (v. 20-26). When He prayed for all believers he prayed for the unity of the disciples. We need to be unified in mind and spirit in the churches that we belong to.
There was a chorus when I was in college that spoke about unity in the Body:
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord.
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord.
And we pray that all unity may one day be restored.
Chorus:
And they'll know we are Christians
By our love, by our love,
Yes they'll know we are Christians by our love.
We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand.
We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand.
And together we'll spread the news that God is in our land.
Chorus:
And they'll know we are Christians
By our love, by our love,
Yes they'll know we are Christians by our love.
We will work with each other, we will work side by side.
We will work with each other, we will work side by side.
And we'll guard each man's dignity and save each man's pride.
Chorus:
And they'll know we are Christians
By our love, by our love,
Yes they'll know we are Christians by our love.

The Lord afflicted Uzziah with leprsoy because he became proud and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense. He reigned during the times of Isaiah. Jesus continue his warning that the world will hate his diciple. He also spoke about the Holy Spirit. He had to leave so that the Holy Spirit would come as we saw on the day of Pentecost. The holy Spirit is the one who will convict us of sin, He guide us in all truths, and bring glory to Christ.
He comforted the disciples. In a short time, they would mourn, but they will be comforted, he gave the analogy of a woman in labor for hours, but when the baby is born, she will be joyful. We need to have this perspective in our lives to see things the way how Jesus sees them.

This is another of the 'I am' discourses (v. 1-17). Today's verse to meditate (and even memorize): Verse 1 I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener.'
Jesus is the vine, the branch are the christians and the sap in the vine is the Holy Spirit, and the vinedresser is God the Father. We are a part of the vine and our life comes from the vine. We are nothing if we are not a part of the vine. Jesus said that we cannot bear fruit apart from Him.
In verse 18-27, Jesus spoke about the world hating His disciples. Let us face it, the world hate Jesus because He showed the world that their deeds are evil. We are not greater than the Master, so we were forewarned that the world will hate us also. Do you realize that the persecution in the 1900s were more than the first 18 centuries combined! We claim we are living in a civilized world but there is persecution facing Christians. It has not happened yet in the United States but one day it will, will you be ready to face persecution. Do not take it personally, be stand firm and remember that God is in control of any situation that we face.
