Today's reading 2 Samuel 1-2; Luke 14.1-24

2 Samuel 1
In verse 1-15, A messenger who was an Amakelite came to give David the news of Saul's death. David hears of Saul's death. (2Samuel 1.4-12; 1Samuel 31.1-13; 1Chronicles 10.1-12). The Amakleite lied to David because he expected David to reard him. David, instead ordered his death. He had still viewed Saul as the Lord's anointed (verse 14) . He had all the opportunities to kill Saul but he had not, instead he left it in God's hand. In verse 17-26, He mourned over Saul and his good friend Jonathan.

2Samuel 2
David, after waiting for many years, waiting on God instead of seizing an oppourtune moment, finally became king over Judah.

There was a civil war between the Houses of David and Saul (2Samuel 2.8-3.5)
In verse 8 Abner made Ish-Bosheth, son of Saul, king in Israel (The other 11 tribes).

Luke 14 with Commentaries, verse by verse
In Luke 14.1-6 Jesus was invited to a Pharisee's house, where he was closely watched. A man with dropsy was there and He asked if it was lawful to heal on the Sabbath, then he gave a practical application of a son or ox falls into a well on the Sabbath, surely, they would pull the ox or son out. Then he healed the man with dropsy.

In Luke 14.7-14, we should be humble and to think ourselves more highly than we should, if we do that we would not be humiliated by our friends and relatives. Jesus reflects the heart of God that we should care for the poor, the oprhans and widows and people who cannot pay us back if we ivite them or dinner or help them out. In Luke 14. 16-24, Matthew 22.2-14. He gave the Parable of the Great Banquet which is believed by many to be the Wedding Feast (when He returns). The certain man invited many but they turned him down. He sent His servants to invite the outcast of the society, those who who lame, crippled , and blind. Those who could never repay this man for what He did. Let us face it, NONE of us in our righteousness deserves to get into the Kingdom of Heaven. If Christ had not made a way for us we would never get to participate in the Banquet.

Job 20 Zophar had a second discourse: the misery and ruin which await the wicked.

Job 21 Job's second reply to Zophar: He pleads to speak uninterrupted (v. 1-6), The wicked often prosper in this life (v. 7-16), a sovereign God does as He pleases with the righteous and wicked alike (v. 17-26), Job admitted that his friends did not agree with him.

There is no difference between black and white, Jews and Gentiles in the sight of God. The cross is the equalizer for all men and women.

Today's Reading John 14

John 14
The disciples knew that something was going to happen that night and they felt uneasy. Jesus comforts his disciples, by telling them that He was going to prepare a place for them. This should be a source of comfort to us as well. Another great 'I am' and a verse worth memorizing, is presented here: Jesus said 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.' We do not claim that Jesus is the way the Truth and the Life, He did! This may not be politically correct and sounds exclusive, but these are the words of Jesus.

John 14.15-31
Jesus promises the Holy Spirit if they loved Him and obey his command. It is not enough for us to say that we love Jesus, we have to obey Him as well. Let us talk about loving Jesus. It is simply this ‘If anyone loves me, he will obey my teachings. The bottom line is obedience to His teachings. The benefit is that the Father and Son will come to the obedient Christian and make their home with him. The Holy Spirit will teach us all things and will remind us of the words that He has said.

Verse to meditate and memorize: John 14.27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your heart be troubled and do not be afraid.

Jesus foretold that He was going away and He will come back to the disciples.

Jehoshaphat defeats Moab and Ammon (v. 1-30)

Jehoshaphat was the king of Judah (1Kings 22.41-50; 2Chronicles 20.31-21.1) during the reign of Ahab. He was a good king although he associated with Ahab. He walked in the ways of Asa, his father and did right in the eyes of the Lord. He did not remove the high places and the people offered sacrifices and burnt offerings there.

Today's Reading John 13.21-38

John 13.21-38
Being a prophet, Jesus foretold His betrayal. Scripture would be fulfilled that night when Judas betrayed Him (Psalm 41.9). The disciples were puzzled when Jesus said that one of them would betray Him. Jesus said that 'It is the one to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.' He gave the bread to Judas and Satan entered into him. He told Judas to go and do what he is about to do quickly indicating that he should hurry up and arrange the betrayal. You notice it said at the end of the passage:Itwas night

Do we understand that it is by the cross that the Son is glorified as well as God the Father. Verses to meditate on today: 34A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." (NKJV) Unbelievers will know we are Christians not by the words or actions or by how devout we are, byt whether or not we love one another. When we get to 1 John we see love is a major theme of 1 John. John the apostle is known as the disciple whom Jesus love. He is the apostle who teaches about love.

Jesus as a prophet foretold Peter's denial (John 13.37-38; Matthew 26.33-35; Mark 14.29-31; Luke 22.33-34). Peter was always a man of action and words but we knew that he denied Christ three times. Let us be careful with our promises and vows we make to God.

Today's Reading John 13.1-20

John 13.1-30
Jesus surprised the disciples by washing their feet. In the Jewish culture at that time it was the menial task of a servant. There were no servant present and no one had volunteered to wash the disciples' feet. This was the only Gospel account of the feet washing. This was done during the meal not at the arrival and was done on puropose to teach them an object lesson. Jesus said 'I am among you as one who serves.' (Luke 22.27). Jesus told them that servant is greater than his master indicating that they should be as humble as He is and they would be blessed if they did what he had commanded them.
